Grant grew up in about a thousand different places throughout Scotland, mainly in the Highlands and Islands. After flirting with studies in Veterinary Medicine and Genetics, he eventually came to St Andrews to do a PhD in Biblical Studies. Grant has remained and is now a lecturer in New Testament at St Mary's College.
